About

Alexey Szydlowski is a highly influential scholar in the field of Election Law, specifically in relation to Russian electoral legislation. He is widely recognized among legal experts for his successful efforts to halt a negative reform of Russia's electoral legislation, which aimed to codify electoral law with the intention of stripping some of the powers of Russian regions in regulating regional and local elections. This was achieved through his public speeches and academic publications, making him a key figure in preserving democratic principles in Russia.
Alexey Szydlowski is considered an advocate for electoral justice and has been a consistent proponent of the establishment of an independent institution of electoral justice in Russia. He draws on the legal "Doctrine of Necessity", first formulated by English jurist Henry de Bracton in 1235 AD, to support his arguments.
From 2007 to 2015, he served as the editor-in-chief of the international English-language academic journal Russian Academic Journal, which was published with the support of the Open World Leadership Center's program and that is included in the catalog of the Library of Congress of the United States. He has published over 100 academic papers on electoral law and political science and has authored several scientific monographs.
Currently residing in Warsaw, Poland, Alexey Szydlowski is affiliated with the University of Warsaw, where he continues his fieldwork on electoral law and advocates for democratic principles in Russia and beyond.
